KIDNAPPED BABE IN THE WOOD

“A brat. A mewling brat. For that, they call us in.” Mr Tom Brown was highly indignant. Mitzi, on the other hand, was more pragmatic.

“A brat is as good a reason as any. An obnoxious brat is even better.”

“Why?”

“Because an obnoxious brat won’t be much missed if things go awry and he gets killed.”

“And why should things go awry?”

“Because the Irish are lazy; the Italians are slippery; the police are useless; and the hairy-chested Special Forces are all, to a man, on hair triggers.”

“Four good reasons. But I have two reasons for things going according to our plan.”

“You and me?”

“Precisely. We let those four… forces I suppose we should call them… bumble around for a while to confuse everybody, including themselves, and then we move in, extract the child and claim the reward.”

“Which is?”

“I’m not sure. There are conflicting rumours about the exact amount. What would you do with money?”

“You must mean what will I do with it.”

“Of course. My mistake. What have you done with what we have earned over the years?”

“I’m… I’m not too sure. You?”

“Not sure either.” He blinked, shook his head and checked his Glock for the full fifteen rounds, knowing full well that it contained the allotted amount.

She looked at him while he did the totally unnecessary inspection. “Tom?”

He looked uncomfortable for a brief moment. “What, Mitzi?”

“Nothing.”

And so, Mr Tom Brown and Mitzi prepared themselves for action. They too, knew where the cash pickup would take place and that all participants in the rescue had decided to let the kidnapper collect the money unhindered and then follow him to the child. Each grouping had appointed one of their number to follow the kidnapper to the place where he was holding the child and let them know via radio. The drop and pickup were made, and the tails followed the clerk’s car as it tried in an amateurish way to foil any such shadow. Naturally, he failed, and a small fleet of cars arrived at the edge of the wood moments after he had parked and walked in among the trees. The tails parked their cars and followed the clerk on foot, radioing for support and pretending that they didn’t see each other. Shortly after the clerk had moved into the dense shrubbery, four groups of men arrived on the scene and followed him carefully, all with guns drawn. Mr Tom Brown, however, had followed his man on the ground in a helicopter, circling very high above and staying in touch via radio. Both he and Mitzi had gas masks dangling around their necks. When he saw the clerk and all his trackers approach a shed, he made his move. Dropping down low to the edge of the wood, he instructed his pilot to approach the hut at speed and just above tree height. When he was over the building, he released a cloud of powerful and dense gas which blinded the men and made their breathing laboured and difficult.
